FIFO can storage racks

Need help. I'm looking for a FIFO (first in first out) can storage rack. I've seen some nice ones, but they hold like 36 cans if you're lucky. Funny- some comments on these products said "I need TWO of these!" Huh. Not gonna cut it.

What do you guys use for the hundreds or more cans that preppers have? Fill it and forget it is appealing (FIFO).

Ideas? Links? Store going outta business selling off their can racks? Sexy plans that turn hamster cages into racks?

TIA.

Ooooh. First realistic possibility: http://www.canracks.com/

DIY though. I'm able, but very busy. Claims to hold up to 400 cans. Now we're talking.

I'll keep looking...

Honestly, I can't bring myself to purchase those racks. That money would buy A LOT of preps.

We use the generic baker's racks from lowes. We paid 69 bucks for the units we have. And that was splurging. I very nearly built them from 2x4's and plywood.

It doesnt have to look great, because anyone that sees it will think you are a cook. Whether or not you have fancy storage will not make you any less a cook.

The idea behind FIFO is first in first out. I have some sexy racks much like yours, and know it makes little difference in cooking; though if you try and cook a massively outdated can it will. I have A LOT of preps and feel the need to organize more than add, thank you for your concern.

There are a bunch of dispensers like this available for soda cans. I don't know if the size is similar enough for them to work with food cans. Many of these ones look FIFO:

Re: FIFO can storage racks

I have in idea. Oxy/acetylene welding rods. Bare with no flux. If I make a large zig-zag shape (times 4 per rack) and brace with more rod I may end up with a cheap, efficient "S" type FIFO rack. MIG'ed together I'm thinking- just spots. Properly done it would be strong as hell with good visibility of the cans. Minimal. Functional. Would likely hold my fat *ss up. Make 'em 6 and a half feet tall.

A jig would make quick work of things... easy to make one of them, too.

All I need is time.

I'll post a pic if I ever get around to it. My holiday starts in 2 weeks so I've gotta wait till near Xmas time...

Hell, I just bought a couple of Gorilla racks from Sam's. Easy to assemble and they hold a lot. I guess I could see why somebody MIGHT want FIFO racks, but...

Why overcomplicate things? Just rotate your stuff, I say. As was said before, all that money could go towards more preps.

The more I think about it the more I think FIFO is a good idea.....now if they would make them stackable.

BTW I have the nice stainless rolling kitchen style racks in my pantry, but they are cluttered and FIFO would make sense ....I should give some thought into building these FIFO racks for my personal use in my sheet metal shop.

Definitely something to think about.

If you have some basic skills, give this a shot:

Too easy to fashion yourself.

Yup , good post InfantryNCO....I was already thinking along those lines. This should be useful for some of the preppers around here.:ok:

Yeah... Now we're talking. Maybe even drywall over it and the preps are hidden, just the outlet end exposed. Much better than my pathetic ideas. Not all my cans are #10, but there should be a way to make different sizes. I saved this PDF.

And to any of you poo-pooing the FIFO concept: your storage is useless if you can't easily rotate. Yes, I have sweet stainless shelving. Many units. I have so much stored that I have to organize the cans into a FIFO set up. I don't give in to group-think so stop trying. Once I am set up then I merely make a list of what I use and pop that in the end of the FIFO rack. Buying more preps is something I am trying to slow down on; it has gotten compulsive and oversize. Time to get back into concentrating on PM's.

The last couple of posts are excellent.

I bought a CANSOLIDATOR from Costco for $320.

It is bulletproof and even my wife likes it.

Expensive but worth it.

That's only useful if the cans all hold the same product and you use a lot of it. Most people would do better just leaving the cans in the cases they came in, or stacking them on a shelf. Don't spend money on something just because it's a slick idea.

90% of our #10 cans are VERY long term storage stuff, no need to rotate in any specific manner.

We did really like the rack idea from kirkhams, may be a winter project for the garage. This would be an ideal way to conceal a great deal of storage stuff.

My only problem with putting that much stuff in the garage is temp variation. Maybe for rice, beans, and wheat it would be ok...

I am thinking if you made the wall out of 2x4's in a traditional manner (not running them flat as in the plan) and you added some fiberglass insulation and maybe some felt board (I dont like the styrofoam sheets) before putting on the outer covering, you may be able to mitigate the temp and humidity changes a lot better.

The related link looks better:

Still too expensive for my taste, but it is cool.
